Models of Deltaic and Inner Continental Shelf Landform Evolution

چکیده
The morphology of passive continental shelves is dictated by the input of sediments from rivers and their redistribution by waves, currents, and gravity-driven flows. The pathways followed by sediments sculpt a landscape whose diversity is rarely matched on Earth’s surface. Sediments are released to the shelf from triangularly shaped, elongated, and dendritic deltas. Barrier islands rise from gently sloping areas, tidal channels dissect flats and saltmarshes, fine sediments form broad convex deposits, and shallow submarine valleys convey sediments and water to the deep ocean. This morphological diversity is based on two main building elements: water and sediments. Fluxes of water and sediments are particularly suitable to be modeled with numerical methods based on the continuum hypothesis and hydrodynamics theory. In recent years, a series of models have been developed to explore and understand the formation of shelf landforms from the dynamics of sediment transport. Herein we present an overview of the most recent results on the modeling of deltaic and inner-shelf morphodynamics. 685 A nn u. R ev . E ar th P la ne t. Sc i. 20 07 .3 5: 68 571 5. Modeling fluvial erosion and deposition on continental shelves during sea level cycles
[1] A numerical model has been developed to predict the evolution and degree of incision and deposition by fluvial channels on the continental shelf during sea level cycles. Rainfall-runoff, mass wasting processes, and fluvial sediment entrainment and transport are simulated using the detachment-limited model of Howard [1994] on a grid that represents the morphology of the continental shelf and...

Whilst understanding and predicting the effects of coastal change are primarily modelling problems, it is essential that we have appropriate conceptual frameworks for (1) the formalisation of existing knowledge; (2) the formulation of relevant scientific questions and management issues; (3) the implementation and deployment of predictive models; and (4) meaningful engagement involvement of stak...
متن کاملTectonosedimentary evolution of the basins in Central Alborz, Iran
Evidence of at least ten different tectonic- controlled sedimentary basins can be recognized in the central part of the Alborz Mountains in the Middle part of the Alpine-Himalayan belt. They formed from Neoprotrozoic to recent time as the results of the relative plate motion in southwest of Asia in Tethyan realm. The basins include: (1) Prototethys Late Neo-Proterozoic to Early Ordovician epi-c...
متن کاملAn assessment of the skill of real-time models of Mid-Atlantic Bight continental shelf circulation
[1] Prescribing open boundary conditions for regional coastal ocean models encounters the challenge of imposing information on sea level, velocity and tracers that characterize the unrepresented far field ocean. Deriving such information from a larger domain model without communicating information from the ‘‘nested’’ model back to the exterior model is ‘‘downscaling’’. We evaluate whether real-...

My long-term goal within the STRATAFORM program is to increase our understanding of the processes controlling the formation, reworking and preservation of event-scale stratigraphy on the continental shelf. My goal in the last phase of STRATAFORM is to extend our capability for modeling shelf sediment transport to time scales appropriate for models of the geologic evolution of continental margin...
